Habitat for Humanity
of Greater Columbus

This album provides a photo journey of the reconstruction of a home originally built in 1951. This project is being done in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Columbus. Volunteers in mission are working side by side to provide affordable housing for an economically disadvantaged family in the area. The following churches contributed to this effort: Hilliard United Methodist, Indian Run United Methodist, Linworth United Methodist, St. Brendan Catholic, St. James Lutheran, and Scioto Ridge United Methodist. We thank these churches and their volunteers!

The photos below are from June 18, 2011 when the home was dedicated, and Lanard receives the keys to his new home.

Project history:
  • September 22, 2010 - Began removal of existing hardwood floors.
  • September 25, 2010 - Completed removal of existing hardwood floors, cut a new location for the basement stairs, and erected new support headers in the floor joist system.
  • September 29, 2010 - Blocked gaps in the top row of foundation concrete blocks, cleaned out the basement, set anchor posts in the blocks and poured concrete in the foundation blocks for the house and the garage.
  • October 1, 2010 - Began exterior wall layout with sill plates for the 2x8 exterior walls.
  • October 2, 2010 - Continued exerior wall layout for the house and garage, built headers for the exterior doors and windows, and built and raised over half of the exterior walls of the house.
  • October 6, 2010 - Westfield Insurance volunteers moved the old basement stairs to the new basement stairway location, built and erected the remaining exterior walls of the home, and built and erected the walls of the garage.
  • October 9, 2010 - Laid the main deck, put OSB on almost all of the exterior walls of the house, laid out almost all interior walls, and began building interior walls.
  • October 13, 2010 - Finished the OSB on the house exterior including nailing the pieces that were left unnailed last Saturday, completed almost all first floor interior walls (except for the partial wall next to the stairs going up to the second floor).
  • October 16, 2010 - Raised the remaining interior wall (for the wall raising ceremony), straightened the exterior walls of the house and garage, put cap plates on the house and garage walls, built and raised the front porch beams, put OSB on the garage walls, prepped the gable trusses for the gararge, marked/laid out truss placement for the house and garage, and raised the garage roof trusses.
  • October 20, 2010 - Sheathed the garage trusses, hung insulation board and prepped house trusses.
  • October 22, 2010 - Complete prep of house trusses.
  • October 23, 2010 - Raised the house trusses and put the tub and roof OSB on the second floor.
  • October 27, 2010 - Arrived onsite to find it too wet and muddy to work
  • October 30, 2010 - Laid second floor decking, sheathed truss heels, prepped first floor windows and door frames for installation, built and installed stair landing, staged second floor stairs on second floor, and built one second floor end wall.
  • November 3, 2010 - Installed the stairs from the main floor to the second floor, installed all first floor windows, built and raised the two exterior walls for the upstairs, repositioned the temporary porch post support to allow for the front porch pour, and put OSB on the front and rear upstairs exterior walls.
  • November 6, 2010 - Installed both exterior doors with locks, completed insulation board on the gables and truss heels, installed upstairs windows, applied sealing tape to all windows, began construction of upstairs interior walls, installed drywall blocking for upstairs knee walls, constructed stairway banister wall, removed some of the old fireplace foundation to increase usable basement space, installed blocking for kitchen cabinets, towel bars and stair rails, and constructed soffit returns.
  • November 13, 2010 - All soffits were installed on the house eaves and front porch, J-channel was installed around the front porch beam and exterior doors, all outside corner vinyl posts are up, OSB ceiling was installed on the front porch, a false ceiling was framed above the main stairs, the back porch was framed and trusses were raised, permanent front porch posts were installed, and insulation baffling was installed on the truss heels.
  • November 17, 2010 - Put up all starter strips, inside corner post and J-channel so that vinyl siding could begin on all exterior walls of the house, began vinyl siding on all walls, and moved the bathtub from the garage next door into the main floor bathroom in our house.
  • November 20, 2010 - Sheathed and shingled the rear porch roof, finished the vinyl siding and fascia aluminum on both sides of the house, completed vinyl siding on the front porch, hung vinyl siding on the front and rear of the house up to the gable, put up two vinyl corner posts and associated returns on the garage and began work on the porch post wraps.
  • December 1, 2010 - Installed the basement stairs, framed around heating duct in living room, built spacer 2x4 wall for bathroom, built counter wall for kitchen, filled out bathroom wall next to tub, put in dead wood for curtain rods for all windows, narrowed bathroom door opening and added miscellaneous dead wood in other areas.

  • January 1, 2011 - New Year's Day
  • January 6, 2011 - Framed out the vent pipe in the living room and the water lines in the bathroom, re-built the man door for the garage, completed the OSB on the front of the garage, wrapped the garage door opening with 2x6's, added deadwood to tons of places on the second floor and a few places on the first floor, added the attic access frame and boxing in the front upstairs bedroom, added a door frame to the storage area across the upstairs hall, and sprayed insulation foam in the vertical wall cavities.
  • January 15, 2011 - Spent the majority of the day working on the 2nd floor insulation; baffles had been installed on the tapered part of the walls; added two pieces between each set of rafters of 1.55 dow insulation board; added 1.55 insulation board behind the upstairs bath tub; baffles were put in above the upstairs steps and 1.55 insulation board was put on the sides above the stairs ceiling to seal off that area; insulation stops were put in on the first floor ceiling joist where the second floor wall starts to seal off the insulation between the second floor wall and the outside wall; insulation netting was put on both end walls upstairs; netting was put up with a few staples then glued to the studs; put the first layer of 1.55 insulation board between the studs on the second floor front bedroom; four attic access openings have been added to the second floor walls.
  • January 22, 2011 - Completed one wall of basement insulation and installed the spikes to prepare for the remainder of the basement insulation, installed the last remaining pieces of Thermax board in the second floor, installed caulking to stabilize stop blocks that prevent blown-in insulation from going where it doesn’t belong, installed all of the netting on the first floor walls, and filled every crack and crevice in the entire house with expanding foam.
  • January 26, 2011 - Finished hanging the insulation boards in the basement, blew in the insulation in all of the netted wall cavities, and hung the man door for the garage.
  • January 29, 2011 - Hung drywall on second floor ceiling, sloped ceiling and the stair ceiling, fitted a ceiling panel in the bathroom, dry walled the two end walls upstairs, started to drywall the other side walls in the upstairs bedroomws but found the 2 1/2" screws were too short, and hung most of the ceiling drywall on the first floor ceiling.
  • February 5, 2011 - Finished hanging drywall upstairs, began hanging drywall in the main stairway, completed ceiling drywall on the first floor, began hanging drywall on the first floor bedroom walls and the kitchen walls, and caulked and foamed where needed in the basement.
  • February 9, 2011 - Finished the drywall on the main house stairs, the first floor bedroom, the first floor bathroom and the linen closet, finished all but two pieces of the living room drywall, cut the insulation foam away from the window frames and wrapped the window frames with drywall upstairs.
  • February 12, 2011 - Finished hanging drywall in the house, QA'ed drywall screws throughout the house, cleaned out the house, and put the dead bolt lock on the garage man door.
  • March 9, 2011 - Swept and dusted down the walls, sanded a few small areas, and primed the interior of the house except for the upstairs bathroom and half of the upstairs front bedroom.
  • March 12, 2011 - Finished priming the upstairs and put two coats of paint on the entire interior.
  • March 16, 2011 - Finished installing window sills, installed kitchen luan, installed a portion of the luan for the first floor bathroom and painted some of the trim work.
  • March 19, 2011 - Finished putting down the luan in the kitchen and bathrooms, trimmed all windows, trimmed two closet doors, continued painting trim work, and cleaned and cut original hardwood flooring.
  • March 23, 2011 - Finished painting all trim work, installed first floor bedroom closet casing, painted and hung all three sets of bedroom closet doors, hung, trimmed and painted one upstairs bedroom door, hung, trimmed and half-painted the other upstairs bedroom door, puttied nail holes and painted window sills and trim, primed and painted the main stairs' stringer, primed the basement stairs, made the patterns for the linoleum in the kitchen and bathrooms, put the skimcoat down on the luan in the kitchen and bathrooms but needs a lot of sanding, and cut and put in place baseboard in the updstairs bedrooms and hall.
  • March 26, 2011 - Cut the linoleum for the kitchen and bathrooms, sanded the skimcoat on the luan seams, began re-laying the house's original hardwood flooring in the foyer and dining room, trimmed the closet's sliding door tracks, built and installed the first side wall attic access panel, and put casing around the dooring opening to the second floor storage area.
  • March 30, 2011 - Laid the linoleum in the two bathrooms, linen closet and kitchen.
  • April 2, 2011 - Continued laying hardwood floor, painted bedroom doors, installed baseboard, and completed the attic access doors and trim.
  • April 6, 2011 - Began cabinetry installtion but was stymied by damaged and incorrectly sized cabinets, extended the kitchen half wall by 3.5 inches to accommodate the handicap convertible sink base, installed the range hood and cut vent to outside, primed and painted tops of half wall caps, completed upstairs baseboard, nailed down raised bathroom luan with roofing nails, laid new luan and put skimcoat on new luan.
  • April 9, 2011 - Finished laying hardwood floor, set upstairs bathroom cabinet and sink, drywalled kitchen wall extension, applied corner bead to it, put initial mud layer on it, laid new linoleum in bathroom, set downstairs cabinet and sink, installed linen closet door, put baseboard down in first floor bedroom, hung first floor bedroom door, installed replacement kitchen cabinets except dishwasher panel, primed and painted hand rails and cove molding, and filled and painted all upstairs nail holes.
  • April 13, 2011 - Trimmed the linen closet door and inside of first floor bedroom door, applied the next two coats of drywall mud on the kitchen half wall extension, put baseboard down on the main stairway and most of the bathroom, puttied nail holes in today's trimwork, primed the undersides of the wall caps, installed the front and back door jam extensions and did paint touch-up on some trimwork.
  • April 16, 2011 - Installed the cap and cove molding on the stairway half wall, hung the mailbox, installed the hand rail to the upstairs (but it needs to be removed to paint the underside), installed the cattle rails on the basement stairs, painted bedroom and linen closet doors and frames, installed the dead bolt insert on the back door, filled nail holes and touched up paint on first floor trim, installed shelving in coat closets, linen closet and bedroom closets, cut down and re-made the bi-fold doors for the upstairs storage closet, trimmed the storage closet door opening for the bi-fold doors, installed door knob sets on upstairs doors and linen closet, installed pulls on kitchen cabinets, spread hay on the yard to make a pathway across the mud, and cleaned the hardwood flooring areas for sanding next week.
  • April 27, 2011 - Hung and trimmed all but one of the remaining doors, finished baseboard in the living room, began baseboard in the foyer, wrapped and trimmed the opening between the foyer and the living room, painted the undersides of the railings, painted all but one side of one interior door, painted storage closet doors, painte the kitchen half-wall, installed the half-wall cap, put door knob sets on the coat closet doors, puttied tons of nail holes, and did paint touch-up on wood work.
  • April 30, 2011 - The bi-fold door was set and trimmed, baseboard was completed in the dining room and kitchen except for the area around the bathroom door, the basement handrail was installed, closet guides were installed, the bedroom door hardware was installed, the dishwasher side panel was installed, the front porch posts were covered, and the back porch soffit was installed.
  • May 4, 2011 - The bathroom door was set and trimmed, the baseboard was completed, the transition strips from the hardwood flooring were installed, the kitchen counters were installed, the basement stairway drywall was repaired, the first floor bathroom fixtures and mirror were installed, and many nail holes were filled.
  • May 7, 2011 - The cracks between the baseboard and hardwood floor were filled, the bathroom door and casing was painted, the front and back doors were painted on the inside, the bi-fold door knob was painted, a lot of nail holes were puttied, some drywall patching was done around some of the outlets that the cover plates did not cover, the peepholes on the front and back doors were installed, the opening for the kitchen sink was cut out, the sides of the window sills were caulked, the second floor bathroom fixtures were installed except for the toilet paper holder, the basement fireplace opening was walled in and dry walled, the soffit was installed on both sides of the garage along with the aluminum facing and p-channels, the overhead garage door aluminum facing was installed and the brick mold was attached.
  • May 11, 2011 - The nail holes and trim cracks along the sides of the doors on the first floor were filled. The window sills were puttied and painted. The first floor doors and puttied trim were painted. The basement hand rail was painted. The bathroom sinks and side pieces were glued down and caulked around the edges. The corner beads and first two coats of compound on the fireplace wall were completed. The errant electrical hole on the inside was patched.
  • May 14, 2011 - The front siding was repaired, J-channels were put around the front gable, the gable shake siding was hung, aluminum returns were installed on both the front and back, the front soffit was repaired except for the top right side piece due to a couple of baby birds in a nest), aluminum facing was installed on the front gable except for the top two pieces, the fireplace wall had the final coat of mud applied, and the bedrooms were cleared out.
  • May 18, 2011 - Did paint touch-up on walls and baseboards, caulked trim work gaps/cracks, sanded and put another mud coat on the basement drywall, removed the caulk around the first floor tub, installed the toilet paper holders, cleaned the upstairs tub, cleaned the downstairs bathroom sink, cleaned out the basement, vacuumed the basement (as best one could with the vac filter we had), cleaned the basement stairs, put the first coat of non-skid paint on the basement stairs, corrected the front door dead bolt catch, finished the blue board on the garage, finished the garage soffit, finished the garage returns, and put the last two vinyl corner posts on the garage.
  • May 21, 2011 - The basement stairs got their second coat of paint, the two house exterior doors and one garage man door were painted, the brick mold for those three doors and the garage door was painted, trim work caulking was completed, more wall paint touch-up was done, the door handles for four doors were taken off and put back on right side up, the cabinet handles for the bathrooms and the four "missing" ones in the kitchen were installed, the vinyl siding for the garage was completely done, the vinyl siding on the porch gable was done, the vinyl siding for the rear house gable was done to the top of the window on the right side and as high as possible until the electrical feed stopped us on the left side, more wall issues were discovered and patched, the basement wall was sanded and got the final touch-up coat of mud, and the peep holes were installed in the house exterior doors.
  • May 25, 2011 - The basement walls were powerwashed, the basement drywall was primed and painted, more trim paint touch-up was done, fascia aluminum for the garage was completed, the fascia aluminum on the porch gable was done, the damaged vinyl siding on the garage was replaced, floors in areas to be carpeted were cleaned in prep for carpet to be laid on Friday and general clean-up of the other rooms was done.
  • May 28, 2011 - The basement block walls were painted, the fence section between the garage and neighbor was removed, weeds, stumps, etc. were cut down between the house and the fence and away from the foundation, shelves were installed in the kitchen cabinets, quarter-round was put down in the upstairs bathroom, carpets were vacuumed, carpet protector was put down on the carpets, closet doors were trimmed to the appropriate height for carpet and re-installed, an extended strike plate was installed on the front door, the rear porch posts were wrapped, the first coat of paint was put on the rear porch woodwork, the first coat of paint was started on the front porch, both coats of paint were put on the front gable board, and the front and back porch rails were installed.
  • June 1, 2011 - A bird's nest with two baby birds was relocated, the vinyl siding and fascia aluminum on the house were completed, the porch beam wrap was completed, puttied screw holes in railings were sanded, and porch railing side pieces were primed.
  • June 4, 2011 - The porch railings were primed, the final coat of paint was put on the porch wrap and posts, the porch railing installation was completed, both coats of paint were put on the porch railings, the shelving was built and installed in the garage, the mobile mini was cleaned out and straightened up, the garage was cleaned out with materials relocated to the mobile mini, the windows were cleaned, the walls were touched up with paint, the upstairs baseboards were cleaned, the basement steps were cleaned, the resin paper was removed from the hardwood flooring areas, the hardwood flooring areas were cleaned, the baseboards in the living room and dining room were painted, and the materials were moved out of the house and into the mobile mini.
  • June 8, 2011 - The shutters were installed on the two windows on the front of the house, the basement was vacuumed and mopped, the four holes created by the electrician in the upstairs front bedroom were repaired with drywall and one coat of mud, a few wall dings were puttied, baseboard painting was completed, more wall touch-up painting was done, the mailbox was adjusted to not rub the siding when it is opened, both bathrooms and associated fixtures were cleaned, the vinyl siding on the front porch was cleaned, basement windows were cleaned, large rocks, bricks and concrete were removed from the yard, general sweeping and vacuuming was done, and much of the kitchen was cleaned.
  • June 11, 2011 - Installed the final back door and garage lock sets, installed blinds in the bedrooms, took out the excess slats on the blinds, caulked around the wall attic access door frames, put sealing tape around the one wall access door that was missed, installed four sheets of 1 1/2" insulation board on the attic access door, put sealing tape on the upper ledge of the attic access door drywall, cleaned all registers, cleaned the inside of the bathroom vanities, cleaned the inside of the kitchen cupboards, put splash blocks under the back porch and garage down spouts, put a second and third coat of mud on the upstairs bedroom wall patches, patched a number of other wall dings, and touched up some painting.
  • June 14, 2011 - The four upstairs bedroom wall patches were sanded, primed and painted, a major effort was getting the areas around the house and sidewalks clear of weeds and stones in order to get a good layer of top soil next to them, we dug out the tree lawn area and put a couple inches of top soil in that area and all areas except beside the house and garage were leveled and seeded.
  • June 16, 2011 - The final front door and garage lock sets were installed, custom-made thresholds were installed at the front and back door, the upstairs bedroom carpets were re-cleaned and re-protected, the hardwood floors were cleaned, the kitchen was cleaned out and up, the narrow strip to the side of the house was cleaned of yard debris and a number of smaller stumps were removed, a layer of top soil was put down the side of the house, the front yard plants and tree were planted, the front landscaping was mulched, the sidewalks were cleaned, the garage siding was cleaned, the kitchen floor was cleaned, the conductor lines from the house downspouts were put in, and everything was removed from the house for preparation of the dedication on Saturday.
